Iconic Archetype: Platinum Defender
Adventuring is a dangerous business. Death has always been a distinct possibility. For some, the thought of losing a close friend or even a rival is devastating. Some poor souls are forced to live through it when one of their companions move on to the next world. Some vow never to let it happen again: those people become Platinum Defenders. Taking the crest of a platinum dragon to rally behind, these amazing men and women stand at the frontlines of any confrontation, daring opponents to attempt getting past them. Even if one does, the Defender's ties to their friends make it nigh-impossible to slay an ally while they still stand.
This archetype is for Paladins, Fighters, and Cavaliers.
HP Increase:
A Platinum Defender has a raw 8+1d6 for HP.
This ability reduces the Cavalier's skill ranks to 2+Int per level. It replaces the Paladin's Detect Evil ability. It replaces the Fighter's Bravery ability at level 2.
Aura of Selflessness:
At level 5, a Platinum Defender seeks to absorb damage instead of their friends. This works very similiar to the 'Shield Other' spell (and thus does not stack with it). As long as an ally is within close range (25ft+5ft/level) of a Platinum Defender, The subject gains a +1 deflection bonus to AC and a +1 resistance bonus on saves. Additionally, the subject takes only half damage from all wounds and attacks (including those dealt by special abilities) that deal hit point damage. The amount of damage not taken by the warded creature is taken by you. Forms of harm that do not involve hit points, such as charm effects, temporary ability damage, level draining, and death effects, are not affected. If the subject suffers a reduction of hit points from a lowered Constitution score, the reduction is not split with you because it is not hit point damage. A Defender can choose not to take this damage, if they wish.
This ability replaces the Cavalier's Banner ability and the Paladin's Divine Bond. This replaces the Fighter's Weapon Training at level 5.
Platinum Shield:
At level 10, the Defender's devotion to their allies are so great, even the normally devastating area of effect abilities such as a dragon's breath or a fireball spell are nullified in their presence. If an ally is targeted by a spell or effect that strikes an area, the Defender may willingly fail the save and take the damage. If the Defender does this, her allies gain the benefit of the Evasion ability for that save. This ability takes up a use of the Paladin's Smite or the Cavalier's Challenge.
This ability replaces the extra use of Challenge or Smite gained at level 10. This replaces the Fighter Bonus Feat at level 10.
Not Today:
At level 14, the Defender refuses to allow an ally to fall dead, even if the situation looks bleak. A Defender may use three charges of their Smite or Challenge ability (or, if fighter, deal their level in d6's as HP damage to themself) in order to cast Heal (CL equal to Defender level) on an ally. If the ally has spell slots or uses per day for a class ability, those are restored as if they had rested. The Defender is Exhausted after doing this.
This ability replaces the Cavalier's Greater Banner or the Paladin's Aura of Faith. This replaces the Fighter Bonus Feat at level 14.
